Listed below are various websites that will help you obtain more information about Valdegovía and its surroundings.
It is easy to enjoy this environment and organise your cultural, sporting and leisure activities.
The river that passes by the campsite is called the Tumecillo, an affluent of the Omecillo River, which in turn converges with the River Ebro. It is a river with a great biodiversity of both fauna and flora, where the predominant species are small birds like the martin, the blackbird and the kingfisher. On your walks you will discover ash trees, willows, alders and poplars. Along the course of both the Tumecillo and the Omecillo Rivers, you will find various stretches for catch-and-release fishing. In its passage through Espejo, the Tumecillo is transformed into a bathing area, culminating into a fluvial pool in a poplar grove that forms part of the Parks of Álava.
Villanañe is the borough where the campsite is located. It is a small, must-see village where you will discover the best preserved tower house in the whole of Álava, the Varona Tower House. Built in the 16th century, it has been restored and visitors can step inside the tower house where remaining furniture, tapestries and other ethnological elements of the time will reveal the history of the house.
Also along the Tumecillo River, and near the campsite, is the Sanctuary of Angosto, another of the recreational parks that can be found in Alava, set amongst a woodland with tables and barbeques. A very well known fair throughout the province is held near the Sanctuary annually.
Valdegovía is our valley and our municipality. It consists of thirty borough councils much like Villanañe, and forms one of the larger municipalities in the entire Basque Region. Nature is ever prevalent in this valley: rivers, streams, forests, villages and fountains are all waiting to be discovered while on your walk.
We are surrounded by three natural parks: two to the west and one to the north.
Spacious valley was declared a Natural park in 1992, and depopulation has greatly favoured the proliferation of flora and fauna. It has three main peaks and many routes for walking or cycling.
It borders so much of Valdegovía that we may be fooled into thinking it is part of it, but it is located in the north of Burgos, on the road to Valderejo, and goes through Araba, Burgos, and Araba again. It comprises many villages from various council districts in Burgos, and it has a great geological richness, but in our surrounding environment it is the flora that prevails, with spectacular beech and oak forests.
Again in Burgos, but this time to the north and on the way to Bizkaia, this natural monument is dominated by beech trees. In its main corner is the Salto de Nervión, a 300-meter waterfall where, with any luck, you will see the beginnings of this River that forms one of the highest waterfalls that you will see in the north of the peninsula.
Returning to Valle de Valdegovía, you will be able to find hermitages or artificial caves dating back to the 4th Century, Romanesque and neo-Gothic art, the GR-1, which goes through the campsite on the way to Espejo from Villanueva, the Sobrón pass, the Ebro River gorge next to the Sierra of Arcena -which will take you to the Tobalina Valley in Burgos-, and the ever-spectacular collegiate church of Valpuesta, gothic in style and which was an Episcopal Church in the 9th Century.
We will stop 10km from the campsite, in Salinas de Añana. The oldest village in Araba, and for those who are unfamiliar to the area, it is home to an unusual landscape: a salt valley. The geology of the town is responsible for the creation of springs of salt water that, from Roman times, once channelled, are set to dry in “terraces”, under the heat of the sun. The salt produced in Salinas is of great purity and is marketed in different formats. It is advisable to reserve your visit in advance.
No reservation is required to go to San Martín de Valparaíso, in Villanueva de Valdegovía. During an easy walk, leaving the GR-1 in the direction of Valpuesta on one side, we arrive at open fields wrapped in rocky walls that simultaneously harbour old tombs and one of the best rated climbing schools in the Province.
We can also undertake various sports activities such as cycling, Nordic walking, horse riding, canoeing, bungee jumping, zip lining, hot air ballooning...
Alava municipalities are grouped into districts called cuadrillas. Valdegovía is one of the 10 municipalities that belong to the Cuadrilla de Añana. Highlights include the Santa Catalina Botanical Gardens in Trespuentes; the Roman oppidum of Iruña Veleia, in Villodas; the Portilla Castle in Zambrana; and the Orgaz Tower in Fontecha.
